Scholars engaging in research seek to contribute their findings to the scientific domain in which they operate. However, when this research is to be conveyed in writing through an abstract, not all scholars have the ability to present their research employing appropriate strategies. In fact, whether it be an article, a research paper, an essay, or a Ph.D. thesis, an abstract plays a fundamental role in the presentation and promotion of scholarly work. A well-structured abstract can be the most relevant single section in a manuscript because, in the first place, most scholars approach an article by only considering the abstract, especially while conducting a literature search; generally, they decide whether to read the entire article on the basis of the abstract. Taking this into account, the objective of the session is to provide attendees with a detailed outline of the different types of abstract (e.g., critical, descriptive, informative) and offer practical tips and strategies on how to structure and ‘language’ an abstract effectively, drawing from a participated discussion and analysis of various authentic examples and materials.

By the end of this course participants will be
