Dr. Samina Nadeem

With a mosaic of vast experience in genre of English language and literature in both the fields of teaching and training, Dr. Samina Nadeem has been providing services in education from school to university level for the last four decades. With MPhil in English Language Teaching (ELT) from Warwick University, UK and Ph.D. from Quaid-i-Azam University, she developed an expertise to blend knowledge with methodology in order to develop an insight leading to critical thinking for her students. In 2024, she was awarded a certificate of completion for Digital Learning and Design Program based on Addie Model of Instructional Design on Critical Thinking as a Skill as a course for Riphah International University. Under her supervision, a script writing project has been launched by the students of GG campus to conduct research to highlight the services of the unsung heroes of the country under the Riphah Aspired Student (RAS) framework: Galileo of Pakistan- Dr. Salimuzzaman Siddique. As an author of textbooks for the school level, she has contributed more than ten books which have been taught in all the provinces of the country.

The present course is to target critical thinking as a skill which is an essential requirement for every learning program at the university level. This skill prepares a mindset of every student to develop, firstly, the cognitive skills which will enable him / her to gain the required knowledge and secondly, to process that information for the processes of analysis, evaluation and synthesis towards creativity leading research. Gradually, the students may assume leadership role for being responsible for enhancing their skills and qualifications required for their own successful careers.

The present course will enable you to undertake MPhil & PhD research with a different perspective. In the given chart, the four quarters sum up the various sub-skills. To enhance our capacity to think and feel, we must learn the basic way of finding truth which may be evident through fact finding, problem solving and reasoning through life-long experiences. Added to this, is the emotional intelligence which develops empathy to carry a bigger purpose of life where understanding, meaning and comprehension as a part of inner development.

Critical thinking combines the two domains and thus has to be cherished by every learner especially at the level of a university. It focuses on knowledge, analytical skills and subskills, character building, identity, culture and a personal perspective of core values and a belief to direct himself/ herself to become a recognized researcher. Before we discover the world, we need to discover ourselves.  The present course will therefore be an amalgamation of all these features to bring a learner to a standard where he can utter words or write with confidence and conviction following his / her inner perspective and culture.

Students will be able to:

• develop critical thinking skill for conducting research in the fields of linguistics and literature
• use mind mapping as a pre-writing technique for gathering and analyzing information and drawing relationship in between the selected features
• enhance cognitive skills for developing reviews of texts (fiction / non-fiction) for evaluation, analysis, logical reasoning (agree / disagree without being judgmental) and comprehension through the knowledge of history, philosophy, intention and purpose etc.
• become original and creative in developing research skills as a technique for writing a research paper or a thesis.
