Prof. Dr. Jamil Asghar Jami

Prof. Dr. Jamil Asghar Jami is currently the Dean of the Faculty of Languages at the National University of Modern Languages (NUML), Islamabad, Pakistan. He holds a PhD in Linguistics and MA degrees in English, Philosophy, and Political Science, with the latter two achieved with distinction. Dr. Jami completed a Research Fellowship in Translation Studies at the University of North Texas, Denton, USA.

He is the author of two acclaimed books: Modalities of Translation-Ideology Nexus and The Soaring Self: Iqbal’s Message to Our Age. He was the founding director of the Department of Translation and Interpretation at NUML and has contributed extensively to academic research through numerous published articles and conference presentations, both nationally and internationally. His areas of academic interest include translation studies, mysticism, literature, language studies, and philosophy. Additionally, he serves as an approved interpreter for the President and Prime Minister of Pakistan.

This module explores translation as a dynamic process of intercultural and interlingual communication. It moves beyond word-for-word substitution to examine how meaning is negotiated, shaped, and conveyed across languages and cultures. Students will study key theories of communication and translation, analyze real-world translation cases, and gain an understanding of how context, audience, and purpose influence translation decisions. The module highlights the translator’s role as a communicator and cultural mediator in diverse professional settings.

By the end of this module, students will be able to:

1. Explain the role of translation in intercultural and interlingual communication.
2. Apply key communication and translation theories to analyze translation practices.
3. Identify and evaluate the impact of audience, context, and purpose on translation choices.
4. Demonstrate awareness of cultural nuances and their influence on meaning transfer.
5. Develop practical strategies for effective and context-sensitive translation.
6. Reflect on the ethical and professional responsibilities of translators as communicators.
